It has been described as the science of patterns, whether found in numbers, space, science, engineering, computers, imaginary abstractions, or elsewhere. Through abstraction and logical reasoning, mathematics evolved from counting, calculation, measurement, and the systematic study of the shapes and motions of physical objects. Today, mathematics is used in most fields, including technology, natural science, engineering, medicine, finance and the social sciences such as sociology and psychology. This Financial Mathematics Major provides graduates with a broad range of analytical and mathematical skills, with particular relevance to statistical modelling and operations research, in the financial context. Students will receive a strong grounding in corporate finance, financial institution, financial markets and various branches of the financial services industry, enhancing the employment prospects of graduates in the technological, industrial and commercial sectors. The Fine Art Major combines contemporary art practice with an understanding of the rich history and traditions of art. The MJRU-FASHN Fashion Design Major focuses on the study of the relationship between garment and the body. The course provides students with a theoretical and contextual framework to understand national and international trends, the cultural significance and practice of fashion design. The development of research, analysis, ideation, production and communication skills is underpinned by the principles of both the design process and creative practice. The three year course encourages an innovative approach to design, coupled with technical competencies and industry expertise, preparing graduates for a broad spectrum of career opportunities within the contemporary designer fashion industry. Extractive metallurgy is a specialist field that deals with the extraction of metals and mineral products from their ores through the application of scientific principles. Extractive metallurgists play a key role in the mining industry. They are responsible for the development of the best process to treat a particular ore and the efficient operation of the processing plant to convert the ore into metal and other products, as well the disposal of wastes in a safe and environmentally responsible manner. Students with an interest in chemistry and mathematics and the desire to pursue a rewarding career in the mining industry often make a successful extractive metallurgist.

Human exploitation of the environment has taken a serious toll on the planet. Environmental Scientists are needed to solve issues such as land degradation; urban and regional development challenges; impacts of mining, oil and gas extraction and processing; biodiversity loss and pollution. The core units develop your expertise in zoology, botany, ecology, genetics, environmental management, sustainability, statistics, and undertaking environmental research. The core biology units in combination with streams targeted to specific disciplines develops the knowledge and skills to meet these challenges. All students will have the opportunity to select from four streams commencing in second year: Restoration Stream; Wildlife Biology Stream; Environmental Genetics and Microbiology Stream; Environmental Chemistry Stream.
