Master of Philosophy (Dentistry)

The Faculty of Medicine and Health has re-developed the Master of Philosophy and Doctor of Philosophy. From 2021, the Doctor of Philosophy and Master of Philosophy will be delivered under one new central name and course code. Both degrees are now available for application for 2021 commencement. The new courses will aim to offer greater research flexibility and interdisciplinary learning across all faculty areas of study. The Master of Philosophy (Dentistry) course is aimed at those who intend to pursue academic careers in oral health or a related field and can be used as a foundation to commencing a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD).At the University of Sydney School of Dentistry, our aim is to put the mouth back into health by progressing a deeper understanding of the links between oral and systemic health.Normally completed over two years full-time, or four years part-time, the Master of Philosophy (MPhil) is a research-based degree in which students undertake supervised research in a range of dental specialisations or disciplines.This course offers students the chance to work with a supervisor who is actively contributing to the development of new knowledge and understanding in the field of dentistry.MPhil students are required to successfully complete a unit of study on research methods, although the thesis is the major examinable assessment requirement for the degree. The word limit for a thesis submitted to the Sydney Dental School is 80,000 words.MPhil students are based primarily at the Westmead Centre for Oral Health and Sydney Dental School and benefit from their peers, teachers and the wider health community that is accessible through the University.Studying at Sydney Dental School provides a unique opportunity for collaborative research and interaction with other health disciplines. Candidates for the degree of Master of Philosophy (MPhil) research and write a thesis of 40,000 -60,000 words on an approved topic under the supervision of a member of the academic staff. Research can be undertaken in any one of the Faculty's schools including the School of Economics; Literature, Art and Media; Languages and Culture; Philosophical and Historical Inquiry; and Social and Political Sciences.Research in the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences extends across a diverse range of disciplines in the humanities and social sciences, embracing traditional, emerging and cross-disciplinary subjects. Staff in the Faculty enjoy international reputations in their chosen fields, reflected in the high level of publications-books, articles, chapters and conference papers-generated by Faculty academics each year.The Master of Philosophy (MPhil) may be complete in one to two years full-time or two to four years part-time.
Master of Philosophy (Architecture)

The Faculty of Architecture, Design and Planning places a high emphasis on its research activity. We have a vibrantly diverse community of scholars and practitioners, many who have taken national and international leadership roles in their fields. The Master of Philosophy (Architecture) allows a candidate to undertake research and advanced specialisation in any of the areas of scholarship and research undertaken by the Faculty. This degree may be undertaken in any one of the Faculty's research areas and may include the requirement for some coursework (up to a maximum of 24 credit points). The program is generally completed in four semesters full-time (2 years) or eight semesters part-time (4 years). The final thesis for the Master of Philosophy (Architecture) is expected to be in the range of 30,000 60,000 words.
Master of Music (Performance)

The Sydney Conservatorium of Music places a high emphasis on its research activity, with a vibrant and diverse community of staff and students. The Master of Music (Performance) provides a unique opportunity to develop high-level skills in the production of research-based creative work in music performance. The final thesis embodying the results of the research will include the final creative work presentation and a written dissertation of 10,000 to 20,000 words.Within the degree structure, candidates receive training in research methods and areas of study pertinent to their research, as well as one to one lessons that help further develop performative skills. Candidates will learn to organise and present creative work (a recital, lecture recital, recording or other appropriate form) that demonstrates independence of thought, critical awareness and interpretative capacities, and high potential as a scholarly musician.Candidates will be able to articulate the contribution which their performance makes towards extending the boundaries of the discipline of performance through such means as expanded stylistic or interpretative horizons, investigation of historical performance practice, development of new performance modes, relationships and techniques, or through enhanced critical, historical or analytical perspectives. Master of Music (Musicology)

The Sydney Conservatorium of Music places a high emphasis on its research activity, with a vibrant and diverse community of staff and students. The Master of Music (Musicology) aims to train students to become independent scholars in the discipline of musicology and to communicate their findings in appropriate written and spoken forms. The program of study culminates in a thesis consisting of a portfolio of papers on two or three distinct topics or a monograph on a single topic. Students are able to carry out research in a variety of fields supported by staff in the Musicology Division, including western historical musicology, ethnomusicology, popular music studies, empirical musicology, music analysis and more. This research degree may stand alone or serve as preliminary to PhD study in the discipline.Through enrolment in required research training modules and coursework units of study, students develop knowledge of a variety of musicological research methods and understanding of different fields in the discipline. Throughout the candidature, a student will work with the supervisory team on the development and preparation of the thesis. The thesis of 25,000 to 40,000 words is the major component of the degree.

The Master of Music (Music Education) facilitates students’ development of knowledge and research skills relating to the discipline of Music Education. This degree promotes the scholarly interrogation of teaching and learning in a variety of contexts and culminates in the completion of a thesis.The program includes two streams of study. The first stream of study consists of two seminars selected from a range of fields relevant to music teaching and learning. The concurrently running research stream provides instruction in research methodology which underpins the supervised preparation of a thesis. The thesis of 25,000 to 40,000 words is the major component of the degree.

The Master of Music (Composition) aims to facilitate the development of advanced compositional abilities and allow candidates to create compositions of a length and complexity not possible during undergraduate courses. Students prepare both a composition portfolio (creative work) and a related dissertation which, together, will form their final thesis.Within the degree structure, candidates receive training in research methods and areas of study pertinent to their field, and work with supervisors on the preparation of their composition portfolio and dissertation.Candidates can specialise in music technology, electro-acoustic, ensemble/orchestral, jazz and music theatre composition, and are encouraged to develop skills in, and an understanding of all aspects toward the successful completion of a composition project. The Master of Laws by thesis equips candidates for careers in advanced research, policy development, public service, tertiary teaching or professional leadership. It will enable you to acquire and develop sophisticated research and analysis skills, honed through work on a topic of your choice that expands legal thinking and understanding.The LLM is up to two years full-time and four years part-time and is awarded on the basis of a supervised thesis of 50,000 words. The thesis must make a substantial contribution to the knowledge of the subject concerned. Candidates are also required to undertake the compulsory research-support unit, LAWS6077 Legal Research 1.

The Master of Education (Research) offers advanced training in education research and provides a research path to doctoral study in education.The Master of Education (Research) is designed for people who wish to: undertake a research degree, but not one of the length and scale of a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) or Master of Philosophy enrol in a PhD, but lack either an honours year or a degree that would permit them direct admission enrol in a higher degree that contains some coursework, but do not need or wish to undertake the amount required by the current Master of Education (coursework) program.
