The purpose of the Master of Engineering (Micro-Nano Engineering) is to provide students with advanced training in the field of Micro-Nano Engineering. The program has micro- and nano-engineering course offerings covering fundamentals, design, fabrication, and applications to provide students with a cohesive and comprehensive learning experience. The program structure is underpinned by a very strong research focus, multidisciplinary scope, and established research strengths in the disciplines related to micro- and nano-engineering at RMIT University which have been rated as above world standard (Excellence in Research for Australia 2015).The program objectives are:To develop a graduate’s knowledge of MicroNano engineering from fundamentals all the way to applications by providing design, simulation, and hands-on micro/nano-fabrication experiences. To provide a pathway for graduates from other engineering and appropriate science degrees to articulate into Micro Nano Engineering. To facilitate research through the Major Project offering and to promote further research as a natural outcome of successfully completing the program.The program will prepare you for a career in the design of devices or systems employing Micro-Nano Engineering fabrication techniques and also for a career in the development or management of such fabrication facilities in either a research or manufacturing context. Possible areas of employment are in the semiconductor industry or in the rapidly emerging area of biomedical device engineering.You will undertake a capstone experience in the final year course EEET2435 MicroNanoEngineering Major Project, in which you will conduct an independent research project that can be analytical, experimental, design or computational in nature (or some combination).The program is delivered in face-to-face mode at the City campus.

Master of Nanotechnology and Smart Materials

Nanotechnology is one of the most important new fields of multidisciplinary science, combining aspects of physics, chemistry, materials science, bioscience and engineering, and is revolutionising modern society in ways unthinkable twenty years ago. Nanotechnology graduates are in high demand for research or industry-based careers in Australia and overseas. There are graduate shortages in the nano-enabling specialisations of chemistry, particularly polymer, colloidal, organic and bio-organic chemistry; materials science and engineering; and microelectronics fabrication. Graduates may work in industries related to telecommunications, computing, defence, solar energy, medicine, aerospace, paints and coatings, cosmetics and environmental remediation. Graduates will also be research-ready to undertake a PhD program in an area of specialisation at RMIT.This program is designed to equip you with advanced, specialist knowledge and skills to participate in the application and research of nanotechnology and new materials to technology development in inter-disciplinary and trans-disciplinary settings.You will acquire a strong grounding in the physics and chemistry of nanotechnology and smart materials (NanoSmart). You will learn about relevant research tools to be able to independently and/or collaboratively design and make new materials with tailor made properties.Breadth in the physics, chemical and biomolecular areas will provide you a background in relevant techniques needed to understand the field of NanoSmart. The focus on research is a key feature of the program. You will undertake a significant research component (totalling 60 credit points) in addition to research methods (12 credit points) and two research-based seminar courses (totalling 24 credit points) as a capstone experience. Seminar courses focus on contemporary and emerging developments in the NanoSmart field. Practical research experience in a number of intensive industry and research-based rotations is a feature of ONPS2498 Advanced Nanotechnology course which is the Work Integrated Learning (WIL) course.The MC204 Master of Nanotechnology and Smart Materials program requires in person attendance.

The Master of Finance will provide you with the practical and theoretical foundations in finance. This program integrates work and learning, and aims to develop specific knowledge and skills in finance, and more generic capabilities in research, analysis and problem-solving, to meet the current and future expectations of finance and related industries.The program prepares students for financial problems they will encounter in business, equipping them with the skills to identify and explore complex elements and develop innovative solutions.Over the duration of the program you will experience a variety learning experiences which are designed to assist developing skills as finance professional and as an independent and lifelong learner. Teaching and learning approaches for this program include: lectures and tutorials, problem-based learning, assignments, projects, the use of assessment and feedback tools, activities using the Financial Markets Training Simulator as well as the completion of a major research project. The types of assessment used in the program may take the form of formal examinations, assignments, case studies, projects, and in-class tests.In the first year of the program, the aim of the courses is to provide students with the fundamental theoretical aspects of finance. This allows students to develop a solid foundation for later studies in finance and will enable them to provide discipline-based solutions within business, professional or public context. In the second year of the program, students will develop a sound knowledge base and acquire a thorough understanding across specific areas of finance. Most units involve a research project component where students must demonstrate their ability to interact with industry, complete an activity in a work context and work in a multidisciplinary team.The range of occupations available for graduates of this program is varied, but includes banking, stockbroking, funds management, insurance and superannuation industries or in other private sector or government organisations which have a requirement for high level, technical expertise in finance. The capstone course BAFI3178 Portfolio Management will give you the opportunity to critically reflect on this program’s curriculum. The course will promote the integration and synthesis of a range of knowledge and skills gained in the program and the application of these in discipline related real-world scenarios leading to work readiness or entry to graduate studies.The core research courses of this program are BUSM4448 Business Research Design (core course) and BAFI3190 Research Issues in Finance (elective). These courses are designed to develop your knowledge of research principles and methods and how to apply them within the contemporary business environment. You will have the opportunity to conduct a research project/proposal and further develop your skills in research methodology.This program is delivered on-campus.

Students experience the requirements elicitation, articulation and development cycle. In this course students also may practice project management skills, systems analysis and design skills, programming skills and information technology and networking skills to holistically experience a systems development process.
